DAP picks Bukit Assek rep for Sibu by-election

SIBU: As expected, state DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng has been chosen by the Sarawak opposition pact to contest in the Sibu by-election.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng made the announcement at a dinner here which was attended by leaders of the four parties in the opposition pact.

They included PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Ali, Sarawak National Party (SNAP) deputy chairman Johhny Wong Sie Lee, state PKR deputy chairman Wan Zainal Abidin Wan Senusi and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

Also present was its by-election campaign director Chong Chieng Jen, who is Bandar Kuching member of parliament.

Wong, 50, a lawyer, is also Bukit Assek assemblyman.

For the first time in the state, the Sibu by-election will see a single and united opposition front facing the Barisan Nasional. Guan Eng said Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai has also been appointed as election director. He said Tan would mobilise resources and manpower while Chong, the director of operations, would be assisted by Tony Pua and Jeff Ooi.

On the by-election, Guan Eng said, “It will be a tough fight. We need a miracle to win, but we believe in miracles.”

Sarawak DAP Chairman Wong Ho Leng Picked By Opposition To Contest Sibu Seat

SIBU, April 27 (Bernama) — As expected, state DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng has been chosen by the Sarawak opposition pact to contest in the Sibu by-election.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng made the announcement at a dinner here which was attended by leaders of the four parties in the opposition pact.

They included PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Ali, Sarawak National Party (SNAP) deputy chairman Johhny Wong Sie Lee, state PKR deputy chairman Wan Zainal Abidin Wan Senusi and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

Also present was its by-election campaign director Chong Chieng Jen, who is Bandar Kuching member of parliament.

Wong, 50, a lawyer, is also Bukit Assek assemblyman.

He will face Sarawak United People’s Party candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew, who is representing Barisan Nasional.

The Election Commission has fixed May 8 for nomination of candidates and May 16 for polling.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its five-term incumbent MP Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew, the deputy transport minister, on April 9 from liver cancer.
